“I have been a seeker and I still am, but I stopped asking the Books and the Stars. I started to listen to the teaching of my soul.” Rumi
Rituals and ceremonies about sweating are as ancient as mankind. It’s a spiritual legacy that has been practiced and appreciated by tribes and people of all cultures… Be it a Finnish Sauna, Turkish Hamam or Russian Banja all these traditions go back to the initial ancient sweating rituals practiced as a sacred cleansing ceremony. In nature lies healing and well-being. We are part of nature and we need to remember the deep relationship we have with mother earth. To revive this relationship and to come back to nature is a matter of the heart – and a main aspect of Shamanism.
Therefore, a sweatlodge-ceremony is especially powerful as it creates a feeling of re-birth. Sweating opens our hearts and connects us to nature mentally and physically. Due to the intense heat our mind is less active and we open up to our intuition, to our true selves. The heat created in a sweatlodge is by heating up stones in an open fire until they are sizzling. All stones are getting blessed and the wishes, longings and desires of every participant are passed on to them as part of the ceremony.
Stones are as ancient as our earth – they are like our ancestors. They were on this earth long before any other living beings… They are sacred…
The sweatlodge is built from wooden sticks and covered in blankets so that the interior is completely dark. There are four rounds of sweating. Each round is dedicated to a specific theme and to one point of direction – East, West, North & South.
One after another all participants make their way into the lodge and sit in a circle around the hot stones. Once all are in, the “guardian of the fire” brings in the hot stones and the door closes – the first round begins…. Each round is a spiritual ceremony dedicated to letting go of everything that not serving us, to opening up to our longings and our deepest wishes and desires and to receiving and being able to receive. All in all the experience of a sweatlodge is impossible to put into words as it is different for every person. It is intense, challenging and cleansing and will leave you with a deep feeling of appreciation and gratefulness.
